Creating Art, Building Community

by Emily Stolarski

This spring, let’s celebrate the creativity, love, and shared values that make our community shine! The 8th Principle Task Force invites the entire congregation—children, youth, and adults alike—to help create a joyful community art experience rooted in our UU values of justice, equity, transformation, pluralism, generosity, and interdependence.

THE EVENT…
A UUCW Community Art Celebration, Sunday, June 14
The 8th Principle is hosting a community-created art celebration featuring artwork, artifacts, and other cherished objects that help represent our UU values. The theme is “The Only Thing More Powerful Than Hate Is Love.” We’ll collectively create a gallery that can be experienced as part of the end of year picnic.
This special event will fill our garden and indoor spaces with visual art, spoken word, dance, music, and storytelling—all centering voices and visions that challenge racism and oppression.

THE PREPARATION…
UUCW’s youngest artists are getting ready for the art celebration!
May 17 is Religious Exploration Art Day. This Sunday, we will get curious and creative by making individual works of art and collaborating on a large group piece. Children’s art will be framed and displayed in the art show on June 14. We can’t wait to see what our young artists create!

Start creating your own piece today!
Join in the fun by preparing your own contribution to our art celebration. Dust off your paints, markers, clay, fabric, knitting needles, or crafting bins tucked away on a shelf. Finish a piece you started long ago, create something entirely new, or choose a cherished object that carries meaning and tells a story about love, justice, resilience, or belonging.

Take inspiration from the blooming colors of spring, the creativity within our community, and the values that connect us. Let your imagination wander. Reflect. Create. Share what matters to you. Together, we’ll build a beautiful community gallery filled with creativity, joy, and love.

Help us plan the event. Complete this short form to let us know what you’re bringing.

Join the 8th Principle Taskforce to center love and creativity! The 8th Principle is hosting a community-created art celebration featuring artwork, artifacts, and other cherished objects that help represent our UU values – justice, equity, transformation, pluralism, generosity, and interdependence. All artwork or artifacts should be able to be displayed on its own. We’ll collectively create a gallery as part of the service and for the end of year picnic and have opportunities to create art together. This is the first event that we hope to organize annually and branch out to bring in local artists and creatives. Join us to reflect, create, and play.
