Mathematicians and scientists exploring weather and other chaotic phenomena acknowledge that small efforts sometimes have huge effects. Marge Piercy wrote, “Connections are made slowly, sometimes they grow underground. You cannot tell always by looking what is happening.” We will dive into some of the history of social movements, and small groups of concerned people making a difference. Where are the places we can create intentional change and grow hope, from where we are?

Kye Flannery is an interfaith humanist chaplain in the UMass hospital system, and for fun and grounding practices Buddhist meditation and metalwork, which are not so different as they might seem.

Unitarian Universalists gather around a shared set of values and beliefs. In June 2023, UUCW adopted the 8th principle as a new addition to our values, explicitly naming our commitment to dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions. A year and a half later, where are we? Join the 8th Principle Taskforce in reflecting on our past, present and future while also appreciating the wisdom and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. 

The 8th Principle Taskforce has been meeting since 2020 to advance an anti-racist and anti-oppressive commitment within the congregation and to support education and engagement amongst friends and members. The 8th Principle Taskforce is led by Rachel Keyo, Mara Pentlarge, David Schowalter, Karen Stephenson, Emily Stolarski, and Evan Wilson.

When we talk about our health care experiences, it a sort of story.  Have you ever come away from a health care experience feeling healed–not just from the medicines, tests, or procedures, but by a new understanding of your situation?

We will discuss the clear importance of a health care professional getting to a healing story for the person they are caring for.  There will be examples of how it is done.  And, perhaps, members of the congregation may get an opportunity to briefly tell their health care healing story.

Overlook FARM shares a driveway with Lilac Hedge Farm at 216 Wachusett St, Rutland. We will meet in the parking lot at the top of the hill at 10:00 and then head to the Overlook FARM gardens from there. It is a short walk on dirt/mulch paths, but anyone can drive down to the garden space. We will be weeding and harvesting for the weekly food distribution to local food pantries, as well as learning about the mission of Overlook FARM. There will also be some less physically demanding activities for those who would like that option, and anyone is welcome to enjoy the beautiful space. The Lilac Hedge Farm shop and ice cream window open at 11:00, for those who would like to stay to eat and hang out at the farm afterward. Don’t forget drinking water and sun protection!
