This weekend is National Coming Out Day. A natural, unforced fit for courage — not just LGBTQ+ visibility, but the broader human courage of dropping a mask in a room that might not be safe. Contemporary edge: doing this in 2026, with LGBTQ+ rights actively contested in statehouses and courts — this isn’t nostalgia, it’s live risk for people in the pews. And it is part of the thread that connects honoring Domestic Violence Awareness Month, with our 50/50 Collection in support of the YWCA Domestic Violence Services Program, as well as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which asks us to consider the stories we tell about ourselves and the way such narratives shape our relationship to both the past and the future.

This is World Communion Sunday in the wider Christian calendar, and it falls right as Simchat Torah closes (the Jewish holiday ends at nightfall on Oct. 4, when the Torah scroll is rewound and reading begins again at Genesis 1). This creates a rich double resonance: what courage does it take to sit down across real difference—political, theological, cultural—and what courage does it take to start reading the same old processes one more time, expecting to find something new in it.

Our Religious Exploration program begins its new year today, and rather than treat this as a children’s milestone alone, we know that this is a congregation-wide happening.. This Homecoming service asks a question with no age limit on who gets to answer it: what do we owe to people we’ll see grow up and those we’ll never see grow up — a further generation, a further century, a world well past our own? Elders carrying decades of memory, midlife members building what comes next, and children just beginning their own religious education all have a stake in this shared covenant of our community.  Join us for this special service.
