Save the dates! Saturday, Nov 25th and Dec 16th from 2-5, we will gather seeds from our gardens. Then, inside Fellowship Hall we will clean and package them and also fill plug trays with soil and sow some seeds. Come join us for a half hour, an hour, or the whole time!

This Friday at 6pm, Garden On is having a native plant sale, plus a tour of our gardens! 

It’s an opportunity to start a native garden or add to your existing one. Plants are $5/pot. Join us!

You are invited to join us Sunday, June 11th, right after the church picnic from 1-6. We recently were awarded a grant allowing us to purchase hundreds of plants from Garden in the Woods in Framingham. Yay!  Now we need help planting them! 

To prepare the area for planting, first we need to remove some non-native shrubs.

If you have them, please bring Loppers, Shovels, Mulch rakes, Wheelbarrow and Gloves. Invite family and friends, and be part of “healing nature one native plant at a time”.

 We Need Cardboard for our Gardens! Would you like to find a worthy home for all your empty cardboard boxes? If so, please flatten them and remove all sealing tape and/or staples. There will be a green barrel by the Sanctuary door to place them in.

We need a hand. Actually, many hands. 

 Join us Sunday, October 16^th anytime from  2-6 pm

We need to get trees, shrubs and plants in the ground soon!  Can you help for a couple of hours? Bring the kids and hand tools if you have them.  We’ll have beverages, donuts and a corn hole game!  Contact Ruth Silver at gardenonteam@uucworcester.org 

Why are we planting natives? Because they are one of the easiest actions you can take to care for our planet.  They support a healthy ecosystem by attracting more pollinators, i.e. bees, butterflies and provide habitat for birds and wildlife.  They do not require additional watering, thus conserving our precious and vanishing resource, water, nor do they require pesticides or artificial fertilizers. And they help mitigate the effects of climate change by filtering pollutants from groundwater and removing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in their roots. Btw, our gardens have been recognized by the city and we received an award from Tower Hill!

Wanna be a worker bee?

Gardeners or wanna-bee’s wanted this Saturday, October 8, anytime between 8 and noon to help Garden-On plant the last of our fall plants, transplant, or just come see how it’s going as we make our UUCW  property a native plant showplace. First, we won First Place for the Best Sustainable Public Green Space from the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill’s 2022 Community Greening Awards.

The awards letter notes “…for the beautiful and ambitious rain garden the congregants installed and planted. We believe beautification efforts like this make the city a more welcoming, healthier place to live.”

Additionally the team has also been awarded a $2,000 grant from the city for making the city more beautiful/environmentally sustainable. And finally, the church will receive 5 free trees from Tower Hill in a separate give-away.

The post Garden On Team News – Green Space Award – June 21, 2022 first appeared on Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester.

We have 14,000 seedlings in our nursery! While we’ll be planting many of them, we’ll also be selling some to raise money for the costs we’ve incurred in developing our gardens. We’re making plans now to pot these seedlings and get them ready for sale.

We pay $90 for 450 3½” x 3½” x 5” high pots.  So, if you have extra pots that are somewhere around that size that you’re not using and they’re just taking up valuable space, we would love to have them! Just drop them off in the backyard of the church. And while you’re there, check out our nursery.

We are excited at how beautiful our gardens are looking and at the support and interest we have received from the congregation and the community.
